"What shall the history books read?"


This profound question uttered by one of the great cinematic Nazis ever created, Major Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz), will command our attention throughout the semester.  We will interrogate (pun intended) the relationship between history and representation of history on film, examining the choices made by artists while also learning about the history of the medium itself.

Each of you will have your own blog and respond to both the films we see together and the films you will choose in conjunction with your director's project.  Be creative, have opinions, and most of all - be punctual with your submissions.  WEEKLY BLOG POSTS ARE DUE BY SUNDAY AT MIDNIGHT!!!!!!  OR ELSE

"Now I know it really happened." Schindler's List is the most influential film about the Holocaust produced thus far. It reaches far more people than books or documentaries. Your blog should address the positive and negative legacy of this fact.  Consider the following questions: 1. Steven Spielberg wanted to make the film look like a documentary because to him the film was "history on screen." What are the limits of this approach? 2. Use the following questions to guide your blog post. Pick a few to discuss: What is the perspective of Frankenheimer on the anti-Communist attitudes prevalent at the time? Does Frankenheimer represent the anti-Communist characters in a favorable way? Is the film misogynistic? Consider the character of Shaw's mother (Angela Landsbury). Why do you think the writer chose to make the anti-Communist Senator a conduit of communist propaganda/espionage?  What similarities exist between Senator Islin and Senator McCarthy?  Can you think of any parallels in reality near the level of this conspiracy? The Seven Samurai

You don't have to answer all of these, but pick the few that interest you the most: “Seven Samurai” is set in a very foreign environment – both in terms of place and of historical period. Did you have trouble relating to this film because it was so “foreign”? By the end of the film, did you feel more comfortable with this environment? What did Kurosawa do to help audiences connect better to this film? A writer on Japanese film has said that the great Japanese filmmakers have “the knack of capturing mood and atmosphere, of presenting the environment as an extension of man.” Do you find this is true of Kurosawa in this film?  “Seven Samurai” is also very much a war movie.
